Yes, I am a mom of three boys. I can name all of the Thomas the Tank Engines, dinosaurs, and Marvel Characters. I have played in mud, climbed trees, collected bugs and eaten them from dares from my boys. By being a ballet teacher I get to dive into another world of pure sweetness. My son and I went to see a movie today and at a certain point a character was describing his mom as a “crazy woman who likes shells” and Walker looked right at me. Then my dancer helper Emilee added “and talks to fairies”. I laughed out loud and smiled taking it as a compliment. Yes, when I am around my students I am not just a ballet teacher but a story teller that uses imagination to spark little brains. Through images dancers can easily point a foot, straighten a leg, bend a knee, and raise up in a perfect releve. Words are so powerful. I can actually see a young child’s brain working to remember a term or movement that I have previously taught them by using a story to help them visualize and execute. It is remarkable and makes me so proud.
Summer is all about camps. This summer has been one of the best for me since I have done several different types with many age groups. I look forward to my remaining camps since I will teach returning dancers and meet new ones. Princess Camp is in full swing right now. During princess camp we have princess training in how to walk, sit, and clap. We have a full ballet class and play games. We color, make princess crafts and learn dances to the princess of the day. Today I watched a 4 year old truly believe she was Moana. She was so expressive in her movements, face, and singing. At that moment I am reminded how much this means to them, it is a really big deal. I do not take that lightly and it motivates me to be the best I can be for them. Then there is the little girl who comes in with a tiara and neckless because she is a princess and I would never make her take it off! My “big sister” helpers adore these little ones too.
My pastor spoke about leaving a Legacy. He asked what is your Legacy? Images of hundreds of little girls with tiaras, tutus, and wands filled my head as I thought about that. I know it is meaningful and I hope they will remember me, the one that touched their head with a light up wand and turned them into a ballerina.
