What a day! My dancers from Turrentine Middle School and I checked in bright and early at the UDA Dance Camp at Wake Forest University. After going over rules, rules, and more rules I gave the girls their keys. They frantically ran to their rooms filled with excitement. I sat there and listened and thought back to my school trips when I was at Turrentine....I remembered just how I felt checking into the hotel room and feeling on top of the world. The girls were thrilled to have such clean dorm rooms and plenty of showers......showers were very high on their priority list. The dancers started decorating their rooms with everything from a Tiki room theme to a "gravity defying" theme. They laughed and smiled as they made up their beds.....I just wonder if they are this happy when they are making up their beds at home?
We went to lunch at Subway after getting a little lost on this huge campus. We enjoyed subs outside, and then walked back to our rooms. They got ready for class and we headed to the gym. As we walked there was a very excited high school team behind us from Southeast Guilford. They were highly energetic and so much fun. My girls made an arm bridge for them as they danced into the building then they returned the favor as my girls entered the building.....my girls let their guard down at that very moment. They had an intense warm-up followed by a short pom routine. They broke up into two groups and one group learned a hip hop number while the other learned a very technical jazz routine. I loved watching these girls dance....they were really getting into it. Being the only middle school team here did not hinder them at all......you go girls. Haley asked me hmmmm.....four times what time it was because she was starving......I told her it would not be long. Lots of girls started fading after 1 ½ hours of dancing but they persevered in the end. Some really surprised me with how well they did.
At 4:30 sharp we raced to the dining hall. Yum Yum is all I can say. Those girls looked like little bees buzzing to figure out what they wanted to eat.....so many choices. I have never seen girls put away food like these girls did today at supper. Dessert was quite nice as well. Destiny enjoyed her banana pudding while most of the other girls consumed lots of ice cream. I think Sara will work at Berrio one day since her cone was so perfect.
After supper we had only a short time before dancing so we went back to the room to clean up. I fixed several girls hair with their little poufs in the front. We walked back over and enjoyed watching the teams perform a home routine. The girls were so energized and excited about watching others do so well. All dancers got on the floor and worked on drill downs. This is an exercise that requires intense listening skills and concentration. If they did well they earned a yellow ribbon. Haley got one and Bethani earned 3!!! The leaders then handed out spirit sticks while the girls hooped and hollered. Our sweet Caroline Kerns got her a stick....whoo hoo! We then walked back to the dorms to practice our routines and have a snack. As I type this all the girls are calling their moms, taking showers, and getting ready for bed. I wonder about my Will who has been at camp since Sunday and I have not gotten to call him. Then there is my little Walker who wonders where in the world his Mommy went. Jacob does not worry much that I am gone as long as there is food in the house. Fred holds down the fort like a true commander. I am lucky. Lucky to have an understanding family but also lucky to be a part of these girl's happiest times of their lives.....times that they will remember forever....times that they will look back on and smile. We share one thing in common....we all have dance in our hearts.
